Aging and Your DNA

How Old are You

There is a saying by an anonymous author, "People don't grow old. When they stop growing, they become old."

Most people believe in something, which will translate how they feel into how they age.

That said, when most people age they are often concerned about various health problems. But there is more. It is important to understand that the mind and body are inseparable - what can affect the mind can affect the body and vice versa.

The human body is an extremely complex structure. As you know, your DNA holds the knowledge that keeps you alive. And, it is your RNA (active twin), which in turn goes out into the cells and imparts bits of intelligence to thousands of enzymes, which the cells then use as their specific bit of wisdom to make proteins.

The fact that DNA and RNA are the beginnings of these processes is truly amazing, but there is more! DNA and RNA are only the beginnings of the body's processes, but the intelligence of the body, what initiates the DNA, is invisible.

DNA - Your Cells CEO, RNA - Your Cells Choreographer

Think of DNA as your master planner - the CEO of the executive world if you will and your RNA as the manager. But the master planner, the DNA, has a predecessor - a choreographer who invents every step of a complex dance but prefers not to be seen.

Dr. Deepak Chopra, explains in his book Ageless Body, Timeless Mind, (Harmony Books, 1993), "all cells in the body are made up of molecules that found their place because DNA directed them there, it could be said that physiology is nothing but intelligence at work, and that every process under way in every cell is essentially intelligence talking to itself."

Now, when examining the impact of words on physiological responses, lets look at the words "old" and "young,." Old is the definition given to the process of aging and young is the designated state of age.

Dr. Chopra writes that the body is a network of messages constantly being transmitted and received. Some of these messages nourish and sustain us, while others lead to disorder and breakdown. That said, "life-nourishing experiences go far beyond cell biology."

Age is a State of Mind

So, consider the following if you think you are old, then you may feel old and likely become old.

Medicine understands that nurturing is immensely valuable physiologically. If newborns are touched and caressed, their levels of growth hormone increase, and the protective coating of the motor nerves, myelin, becomes thicker. A mother's loving urge to cuddle her baby translates directly into life-sustaining biochemical reactions. And, if babies are deprived of loving attention the physiological effects can be profound - they may become emotionally stunted or dysfunctional.

Every impulse of intelligence has a physical response. Therefore, the body keeps in balance through complex rhythms and cycles - the biorhythms if you will. When the body is in balance, it sends out signals of comfort and if it is unbalanced it sends out signals of discomfort. Living in harmony with the body's rhythms allows the body to thrive and be healthy.

You are What You Believe You Are

All of this is pretty heady stuff! But, if you translate all of this scientific jargon into terms you can understand or relate to - ultimate health and wellness could be linked to what you believe in - your spiritual beliefs.

It doesn't matter what religion or spiritual system you believe in because your belief will inevitably affect your state of health and well-being. Therefore, the lack of beliefs, could be seen as an undermining determinant to ill health.
