Cyclothymic DisorderThe Zone Between Bipolar Disorder and Depression
In between bipolar disorder and depression, there is actually a zone (cyclothymic disorder) where people live who do not fit the diagnostic criteria for either.
The defining criteria that separates bipolar and cyclothymic disorder is the intensity and duration of the symptoms shared by both conditions. Cyclothymic disorder is characterized by spurts of energy when less sleep in required, periods of a relatively stable emotional state which are then followed by a state of negativity, and sadness that is not tied to any particular life event. This disorder creates an erratic life pattern. Cyclothymic Disorder can Affect Almost AnyoneAlthough a small percent of the population may be affected by cyclothymic disorder it has serious life impacts on those that have it. Many people viewed as driven individuals may fit in this group of people if, upon closer examination of their emotional lives, reveals they experience times of pronounced apathy. The ups and downs, fast then slow, hot to cold and vice versa patterns ruin personal relationships, work performance, and life rhythms. Employers are often baffled by the waxing and waning of employees who have cyclothymic disorder. The variations in mood and performance are noticeable but not to the extent that a medical condition would be considered. Sufferers themselves are at a loss to explain what has changed. They just don't feel as interested or energetic about their work, hobbies or commitments for awhile. Then they do again. The consistency called for in many jobs and tasks seems impossible for them to maintain. How Does Cyclothymic Disorder Present in an Individual?Cyclothymic disorder is first noticed mostly in older males and female teens (when the behaviors are often dismissed due to youth). Diagnosis criteria requires an established pattern of two years or more. Other criteria include the absence of manic episodes, deep depression or schizoaffective disorder. The stable mood lasting less than two months and the establishment of the fact that behavioral symptoms cause significant problems at home, work, or school are also parameters that need to be met for a diagnosis of cyclothymia. Substance abuse and other medical conditions must also be ruled out as possible causes. Due to the hopelessness experienced from poor work or school reviews, inability to maintain relationships, substance abuse, legal and financial problems, individuals retreat behind an exterior of indifference or physically isolate themselves physically. Unable to understand or explain their behavior, suicide is sometimes committed. If the cyclothymic disorder cycle is present in your life a candid discussion with your doctor is recommended.
