The term plastic surgery is derived from the Greek word, Plastikos, which means to mold or shape. Plastic surgeons reshape tissues into new forms and shapes.

Plastic surgery is a specialised field and surgeons spend years at medical school as well as several years of specific training in plastic surgery. Don’t be afraid to ask for a surgeon’s credentials and ask to see some photos of his work.

Plastic surgery often overlaps in areas and may necessitate two specialists working together. Trauma to the mouth may require a dental surgeon and a plastic surgeon. A general surgeon may perform a mastectomy and then step back so a plastic surgeon can follow up with a breast reconstruction.
