The top things a lung cancer patient should do before and after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Being a lung cancer patient can be very difficult at times, and can result in heavy emotional and familial burdens. The days following a recent diagnosis can be frustrating for a lung cancer patient if he or she does cannot make the transition from an illness-free lifestyle to one that is much more restrictive.

What to Do if Symptoms Exist

First, figure out the severity of the symptoms that may be associated with lung cancer. These include: coughing up blood, shortness of breath, wheezing, and unexpected weight loss. If it can be confirmed that these symptoms exist, inform the nearest person in sight.

If access to a housemate or doctor is unavailable, or if immediate attention required, like when there is severe internal bleeding or difficulty breathing, try to contact the local emergency response unit so they can send out an ambulance in due time.

What to Do after Being Diagnosed with Lung Cancer

After a diagnosis has been made by a physician, create a positive mindset before encountering various methods used for treating your lung cancer. Lung cancer therapy can have emotional and physical effects that may be mishandled if the patient is not prepared to accept the consequences of treatment. Hair loss, for instance, is one of the drawbacks of chemotherapy which may not be so readily accepted.

It is helpful to take additional precautions. You should consider these off-clinic precautions regardless of the severity of your diagnosis. These include dusting your home often, maintaining humidifiers according to manufacturer’s recommendations, using exhaust fans when cooking, ventilating any fumes from space heaters, and replacing any outworn carpet.

Begin to manage medications properly. Ask a physician to jot down the generic names of all your medications. Names and brands of medications of even the most commonly used drugs on the market can be difficult to remember sometimes.

If anyone has a history of lung operations, he will most likely have intravenous “tubes” in his arm, as well as tubes to drain from the surgical wounds. Be sure to follow up with a doctor on what do after these have been removed a few days following surgery.

Lifestyle Modifications at Home

Try to change an existing diet to foods that are known to have positive effects on respiratory health. Garlic, for example, can help improve the functions in the blood vessels in your lungs. Dark vegetables like spinach are rich in vitamin C and folic acid, and can also decrease complications from lung cancer.

Get extra rest during lung cancer treatment such as chemotherapy. Home treatment for lung cancer includes sticking to usual sleep routine and getting just an extra hour or two of sleep. Lung cancer patients have reported fatigue shortly following treatment, so this may help to readjust to new sleep habits.

Exercise consistently and maintain a regular workout schedule. Swimming and walking are good ways to stay fit while avoiding any additional damages to the lungs. Ask a physician about the ideal time to start exercising and be sure to increase activity in a gradual manner, rather than overstraining the respiratory system.

Build a steady lifestyle. Stay active and set reasonable goals. Keeping the body in motion as much as possible helps to give it a sense of purpose. Continuing on with your daily activities can also add to this protocol without having to discontinue enjoyable activities.
