Heartburn occurs when the lining of the esophagus becomes irritated by stomach acid.

At the bottom of the esophagus is a valve called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This sphincter opens and closes to allow food to enter the stomach, but if it stays open for too long, stomach acid can leak into the esophagus and cause a burning sensation known as heartburn. The symptoms of heartburn can be quite painful for those who experience them.

Heartburn Symptoms

  • Burning in the throat and chest
  • Chest pain
  • Cough or sore throat
  • Stomach acid backing up into throat or mouth
  • Bloating
  • Nausea

Heartburn Causes

There are several causes of heartburn. The most well known is acid reflux, or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Acid reflux is a common condition where weakness in the LES causes stomach acid and bile to back up into the esophagus. People with acid reflux have a much higher concentration of stomach acid. Symptoms of acid reflux are most often felt at night. For those who suffer from nighttime heartburn, it can become nearly impossible to sleep.

Pregnancy can also be the cause of heartburn. Progesterone released during pregnancy relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter and lets acid flow into the esophagus. Pregnant women often experience heartburn in the last trimester because the growing fetus takes up more room in the abdomen and puts pressure on the LES.

Certain foods and medications may trigger heartburn. Diazepam, tricyclic antidepressants, Beta-blockers, nitrates and opiates are all known to cause heartburn. Some asthma and allergy medicine may also increase the risk for heartburn.

Foods That Cause Heartburn

  • Alcohol
  • Black pepper
  • Chocolate
  • Citrus fruits and juices
  • Coffee
  • Fried foods
  • Foods with high fat content
  • Garlic
  • Ice cream
  • Onions
  • Peppermint
  • Soft drinks
  • Spicy foods
  • Tomatoes
  • Vinegar

Heartburn Treatment

Fortunately for those who suffer from acid reflux, there are many treatments for heartburn. Antacids, such as Tums or Rolaids, may be used for quick relief, but it is often short-lived. H2-receptor antagonists, like Pepcid, Tagamet and Zantac are available over the counter and provide longer lasting relief. These medications may be taken before heartburn occurs to help prevent it. Other types of heartburn medication are proton pump inhibitors, like Prilosec, Nexium and Prevacid. These medicines are available with a prescription.

There are no heartburn cures, but there are a few precautions that can be taken to help prevent heartburn. Raising the head of the bed will help those who have heartburn while lying down. Eating smaller meals and avoiding eating right before bedtime may also alleviate nighttime heartburn symptoms. Quitting smoking will greatly reduce the risk of heartburn. Those people who have heartburn caused by anxiety and stress might benefit from alternative heartburn remedies like aromatherapy and massage.

If left untreated, heartburn can cause more severe problems. Excess acid in the esophagus can cause scarring which can eventually cause ulcers or even cancer. Patients who suffer from frequent heartburn should consult their doctor to discuss the best method for treating heartburn.
