Many millions of men and women are personally humiliated or ashamed of their receding hairlines. There are many significant options for people who are balding.

According to the Hair Club for Men, men lose their hair due to a chemical called Dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. If men are genetically more resistant to this chemical, they keep their hair longer. If men are less resistant, they lose their hair faster. The result is male pattern baldness: either a receding hairline or a thinning crown on top of the head. For many men, hair loss represents old age, unattractiveness, and the loss of one’s sexuality. It can also mean the loss of one’s self-esteem and confidence.

Treatment Products for Balding Men

While the effectiveness of these products is entirely debatable and subject to personal scrutiny, there are certainly plenty to choose from. Many can be found on the Hair Club for Men web site, but others are included:

  • Hair replacement system, which involves adding human hair in the same pattern a man is balding to replicate its natural growing direction
  • Hair transplant, which involves using high-powered surgical microscopes to naturally divide hair into its old pattern
  • Hair plug, in which small plugs of hair taken from the hair and scalp are surgically implanted on bald spots
  • Advanced shampoo and conditioner treatments which stimulate hair growth in thinning areas and keeps hairs from falling out
  • Alternative methods of cutting and styling, such as going completely bald or using products to enhance existing hair
  • Prescription medication such as Rogaine or Propecia which can assist in hair growth
  • Purchase a quality hair piece to provide aesthetics

The level of treatment would depend on a man’s individual amount of hair loss.

Women Lose Hair, Too!

Many people overlook the fact that women also suffer extreme hair loss. For women, this is often a devastating event, especially considering that hair loss for women is slightly less socially acceptable.

According to Hair Loss Talk, women’s hair loss is often due to an imbalance of hormones. An overactive thyroid, malnutrition, or the effects of menopause or pregnancy can all cause hair loss. Fortunately, hair loss in women is sometimes reversible.

After consulting a physician to determine the cause of her hair loss, a woman has several treatment options. These mainly include medications, shampoos, creams or injections. A dermatologist can best prescribe which option would be best depending upon the reason for the hair loss.

If a woman is going bald due to genetics or undetermined reasons, she can attempt to cover the baldness with a different hairstyle. If the bald patch is large, she can purchase a quality wig or hair piece. Some women even opt to go completely bald as a statement that women do not need hair to be beautiful.

Conclusion

Both men and women suffer hair loss, and it can be a blow to their self-esteem. Hair loss can make a person feel unattractive, old, and insecure. Fortunately, there are many options for men and women on the market that can assist in preventing total hair loss, or can replace hair in bald patches. There are also more natural ways to treat hair loss, such as wearing a hair piece, restyling one’s hair or going entirely bald.
