Learning the symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency is paramount to curing the deficiency.

Vitamin D deficiency is a condition in which individuals are not receiving enough of the vitamin to maintain health. When this happens, the body will react by experiencing different symptoms – first mild and then more severe as the deficiency continues. Individuals suffering from a vitamin D deficiency must seek treatment in order to be healthy again.

Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency Disorder

As the body is deprived of vitamin D, several different symptoms occur. Individuals might experience chronic fatigue, deep aches and pain within the bones, depression or seasonal anxiety disorder, periodontal disease or other dental issues, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and even bone fractures. Unfortunately, by the time these symptoms become problematic enough for individuals to visit their physician, they are already severely deficient. Vitamin D Deficiency Treatment

When vitamin D deficiency is diagnosed in a patient, doctors will most likely begin treatment by prescribing a certain amount of vitamin D each day. Sometimes, this will come in the form of shots. Some adults may need up to 50 000 internal units of vitamin D each day in order to reach proper levels of vitamin D in the body. While supplements are available, these supplements typically contain about 400 internal units, which is not enough. Experts now suggest that the body needs approximately 1000 internal units a day in order to fulfill the proper processes to keep the individual healthy. Tips for Preventing Deficiency of Vitamin D

There are two main ways an individual can receive vitamin D – from the sun and from the foods he or she consumes. As vitamin D is made when the body is in the sun, it’s important to be in the sun each day for approximately 10 to 15 minutes with no sunscreen. Individuals with dark skin may need to extend that time to 20 or 25 minutes in order to get an adequate supply of vitamin D. Eating foods that are rich in vitamin D can help as well. These foods include fatty fish such as herring, cod, salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines. Certain fortified milks contain vitamin D as well.

Individuals who feel they may be vitamin D deficient should schedule an appointment with their physician and have their blood levels tested. This is the only way to know for sure whether one is deficient or not. By having the information above, individuals are more prepared to discuss their deficiency of vitamin D with their doctor and ensure that they are as healthy as possible.
