The immune system is a complex arrangement which can be narrowed down to six main areas of the body which actively “fight” invaders such as bacteria and viruses. These six areas are:
This is the first line of defense. There are cells of the immune system waiting in preparation, in all the layers of the skin.
It's in the chest and is the training center where T-cells are taught to tell the difference between the enemy and friends. They destroy cancer cells and viruses.
During an infection, these glands can become swollen while they fight the attacker. If successful, the infection is kept in one place and does not spread.
This is where lymph is produced, as well as Kupffer cells which fight bacteria and toxins. The lymph fluid carries the cells around the body.
All immune cells originate here.
This is where blood is filtered and bacteria is destroyed.
There are also several types of antibodies and various blood cells which keep the body healthy. When everything in is balance people feel good. When ill, the immune system has to work hard to restore balance. If the immune system is strong, the battle will usually be won and harmony will be the reward.
Smoking
Excessive alcohol and recreational drugs
Environmental Pollution
Pesticides
Poor diet
Food additives e.g. colouring
Chronic Stress
Depression
Lack of exercise
Immune system problems cause greater vulnerability to illnesses such as colds, flu, skin infections, Candida, cystitis and stomach upsets. The cancer fighting cells are also weakened , causing greater risk of susceptibility.
Cut down on caffeine drinks and refined and sugary foods. Eat more fresh organic fruit and vegetables. Drinking water helps to flush out toxins. 6 to 8 glasses spread out over the day is recommended.Take a good multivitamin with vitamin C daily.
Ensure adequate rest, light and exercise. 7 to 8 hours sleep is ideal and as the body needs daylight, avoid sleeping all day and being up all night. Moderate exercise improves the lymphatic function which helps improve the immune system. Spend some time walking in clean fresh air every week.
Cope with stress by watching funny movies, learning to meditate, go to a yoga or Tai Chi class. If depressed, consider seeing a therapist or a doctor. Improve self esteem by exploring ways of being more positive about life. Most importantly, a happy healthy relationship will help improve the immune system.
